Row With Us!
SMRA hosts a number of different groups that cater to different levels of experience, competitiveness, and availability. If you have questions about any of the information below, please contact us using the form at the bottom of the page!

Learn to Row
Each summer, SMRA hosts a Community Learn-to-Row Open House for anyone interested in learning more about the sport (no prior experience required)! Additional LTR programs may be offered by our members if they are available, typically during the summer. The most up-to-date information about our Learn-to-Row offerings will be posted on our Facebook page.

Sculling
Members are welcome to attend our sculling programs at Chancellor's Point. Guests are also welcome to scull with us for a small, per-session fee. Drop in fees can be applied to a membership if you choose to join after dropping in. Whether you're just learning to scull or you'd just like a group to practice with, you're welcome to come out! If you own your own boat, we also offer storage space at Chancellor's Point!
To ensure safety on the water, our scullers are expected to have at least some previous rowing experience and should be able to manage a rowing shell on the water without continuous supervision. We highly recommend that newer rowers get comfortable with sculling before progressing to sweep rowing boats. Further information about safety guidelines and practice schedules will be disseminated to members by club leadership.

Sweep Rowing
Throughout the year, members with previous rowing experience are welcome to participate in our sweep rowing program, which uses larger team boats like fours and eights. We recommend that sweep rowers achieve basic competence in a sculling boat in order to facilitate flexible practice lineups; it's also a great way to improve sweep technique!
Practices are held at the St. Mary's College of Maryland River Center two to three times each week from 5:15-7:15AM during the Summer and 5:15-7:15PM in the Fall and Spring. Practices focus on skill and fitness development with the goal of racing, but participation in races is not required.
The River Center has shower facilities, which are useful for those who may have to drive to work immediately after morning practices. As with our Sculling programs, guests are welcome to participate in practices for a small drop-in fee.

Competitive Opportunities
As you may see from our Hall of Fame page, we compete in a variety of (usually local) regattas throughout the year. Our competitive rowers compete in both sculling and sweep events, and often coordinate training and exercise plans with each other throughout the year. Contact us using the form below to learn more!
