SMRA Rowing Groups
SMRA hosts a number of different groups that cater to different levels of experience, competitiveness, and availability. If you have questions about any of the information below, please contact us!

Learn to Row
Each summer, SMRA hosts a Community Learn-to-Row Open House for anyone interested in learning more about the sport (no prior experience required)! The most up-to-date information about our Learn-to-Row offerings will be posted on our Facebook page.

Evening Sculling Program
Each summer, members are welcome to attend our evening sculling program. Non-members are also welcome to drop in to this program for a small, per-session fee. Drop in fees can be applied to a membership if you choose to join after dropping in. Evening sculling sessions are typically held twice per week from 5:15-7:00PM at the Chancellor's Point Recreation Area of Historic St. Mary's City. The program focuses on skill development, and is great for those with limited sculling experience; however, participants are expected to have some previous rowing experience and should be able to manage a rowing shell on the water without continuous supervision.

Competitive Sweep Rowing
Throughout the year, members with previous rowing experience are welcome to participate in our competitive sweep rowing program. Practices are held at the St. Mary's College of Maryland River Center two to three times each week. Practice begins at 5:15AM during the summer or 5:15PM in the Fall and Spring and lasts two hours; practices focus on skill and fitness development with the goal of racing, but participation in races is not required. The River Center also has shower facilities, which is useful for those who may have to drive to work immediately after morning practices. As with Evening Sculling, non-members are welcome to participate in practices for a small drop-in fee.

Competitive Sculling Program
Our competitive sculling program is for athletes who are confident in their sculling skills and are interested in following a training plan year round. This program meets at either the Chancellor's Point Recreation Area or the St. Mary's College of Maryland River Center on weekdays that don't have a scheduled sweep practice, at the same time as sweep practice would be held. Practices will focus primarily on race preparation. Additional practices may be coordinated by participants on an ad hoc basis. Participation in this program is limited to members only, but as with Sweep Rowing participation in races is not required.
