Learn to Row with SMRA

SMRA offers opportunities for new rowers to experience the joy of being on the water.

Each year, during the summer, SMRA hosts a variety of programs aimed at teaching first-time rowers about the sport and enabling them to grow comfortable in rowing shells on the water. These programs are required for those without previous experience to join the team.

It all starts the first Saturday in June (weather permitting) with our annual Community Learn-to-Row Open House. Coinciding with USRowing's National Learn to Row Day, this free event is open to members of our community 18 years of age or older who wish to get a taste of the sport. It features time on rowing machines (to learn basic movements) and opportunities to get on the water in actual rowing shells, under the supervision of our experienced volunteers. Specific information about this event - such as location and registration requirements - is posted on our Facebook Page in the weeks leading up to the event each year, so be sure to check there to stay up to date!
Following our annual Open House, we usually offer beginner-oriented evening practices during the rest of the summer at our Chancellors Point location, where participants will get the chance to get out on the water with the Mighty Crabs in small sculling boats. These programs are offered for a small fee, which is usually less than our normal membership cost.

Please note that the ability of our club to support additional beginner programs is entirely dependent on the availability of our volunteer coaches and any additional resources required to ensure our programs are safe and effective. As a result, some programs offered by our club may change significantly from year-to-year, or may no longer be offered. For the most up-to-date information about our club's programs, please follow and consult our Facebook Page, or contact us with any questions using the form at the bottom of the page.
